Firearms Training Courses
Three courses are offered. They typically begin indoors with discussions and demonstrations of the how and why of the relevant techniques. Unloaded firearms and inert simulated ammunition are used to practice techniques to build familiarity and skill. The learned techniques are then applied in live fire exercises. Classroom training decreases and range time increases in the more advanced courses.
The Four Hour Firearms Safety and Familiarization Course
This introductory non-shooting course is designed to provide the fundamentals of safe gun handling to those persons relatively unfamiliar with firearms. Based on NRA lesson plans, this class is four hours in length where approximately two hours can be devoted to marksmanship, selection of a firearm for personal defense or other related topics of the trainee's choosing.
The Eight Hour Nevada Concealed Firearms Permit Course
This course consists of lectures, videos, hands-on experience, testing, and range qualification with marksmanship training. It meets and exceeds the training and proficiency requirements for the issuance of a resident or non-resident Nevada concealed firearms permit.
The required 8 hour course covers the advantages and disadvantages of various handguns and equipment. Emphasis is given to the techniques of safe gun handling and marksmanship that are the first skills needed for range shooting as well as defensive situations. Legal responsibility for the carrying, use and misuse of firearms and the basics of civiland criminal liability that a permittee needs to know are taught by an attorney with over 20 years of full time experience in the criminal justice system as a prosecutor, defense attorney and judge. The renewal course is a condensed four hour version.
The 4 Hour Defensive Firearms Course
No one is going to be able to effectively operate a firearm in a lethal threat encounter with the very limited skills that can be taught in any 8 hour CFP course. Survival in a gunfight comes down to the ability to get the first stopping hits. This requires the balancing of speed and accuracy under stress while dealing with movement, the potential of non-threat individuals, low light, injuries, equipment malfunctions, and other impediments. In addition, your survival requires preventing the adversary from harming you through application of threat avoidance principles.
These courses are actually a series of 4 hour classes of gun handling and tactical skills tailored to the individual trainee's ability and motivation. The most important techniques are mastered first, and then we build on that solid foundation. Essentially, I bring my years of training to the trainee in manageable portions which he or she can properly learn and then practice to perfection outside of class.
Training is available in handguns, defensive shotgun and defensive carbine/rifle and can be customized to suit the individual trainee. For those interested in competition, the training can focus on the skills needed to proficiently compete in those events. For those who use firearms professionally, training can focus on special needs such as improving weapons qualification scores. As necessary, the techniques can be adapted to be consistent with the agency or organization requirements as specified by the trainee.
